A Musical Journey with Shaya Petroff

Enjoy the sounds of stirring music ranging from Jewish compositions to Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bach and Brahms with highly respected local musician, Shaya Petroff as he tinkles on the ivories and shares insights into the music.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Shaya Petroff studied music with Alberto Guerrero (the teacher of Glenn Gould), and with the great Swiss musician Pierre Souvairan (himself a student of Alfred Cortot and Rudolf Serkin). Shaya is the recipient of many scholarships and awards from local musical festivals as well as the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has appeared in public performances with some of Canada's finest musicians including violinists Martin Beaver, Catherine Manoukian, Moshe Hammer, cellist Ofra Harnoy and clarinetist Shalom Bard.

Media enthusiast and local lecturer, Mark Clamen hosts a lively discussion looking at the unexpected Jewish plot twists and quirky Jewish characters in television today.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Mark Clamen teaches philosophy at the University of Toronto and is a lifelong fan of television. This past winter, Mark gave an eight-part lecture series at the Miles Nadal JCC on The Art of Television. He is a member of the Toronto Jewish Film Society committee and is Programming Co-Chair for the upcoming Limmud Toronto conference.
The Sephardic Songs of the Seder
with Cantor Aaron Bensoussan

Enjoy an interactive presentation of Pesach songs and customs of the Jews from Morocco with Moroccan-born Cantor Aaron Bensoussan who is also a concert artist, composer and instrumentalist from a prominent Rabbinic dynasty. Cantor Bensoussan studied the art of Sephardic liturgical music and piyutim from his father and master musicians in Morocco. Add a little Moroccan cultural flavour to your Passover seder!!
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Moroccan born Aaron Bensoussan is a Cantor, concert artist, composer and instrumentalist from a prominent Rabbinic dynasty. Cantor Bensoussan studied the art of Sephardic liturgical music and Piyutim from his father and master musicians in Morocco. He moved to New York at the age of 14 to study in Yeshiva. From the moment he was exposed to the beautiful art of ashkenazic hazzanut, he was mesmerized. He has toured extensively throughout the Unites States, Israel and Europe performing both Ashkenazic Hazzanut and Sephardic music. He is the senior Cantor of Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue in Toronto. He has recorded five solo albums and has participated on six other albums with colleagues and as guest vocalist.

Sneak Preview of From the Melting Pot into the Fire: Contemporary Ceramics in Israel

Yael Novak of the Ceramics Artists Association of Israel shares insights and images from a new exhibition opening at the Gardiner Museum on February 4, 2010. The exhibition provides fresh and intensely personal perspectives on contemporary life and art in Israel. Featuring 37 works of art originally shown in 2007 as part of the Fourth Biennale for Israeli Ceramics at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, the exhibition features works which address complex issues involving questions of identity and the uncertainty of life in contemporary Israel.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yael Novak, a graduate of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has taught, curated and exhibited extensively around the world. A studio potter since 1990; her work is found in several international private and corporate collections. She is a founding member of two ceramics cooperatives and serves as Director of Foreign Affairs for the Ceramic Artists Association of Israel. By launching ongoing international professional dialogue and fostering artistic cultural exchanges, she hopes to establish Israeli ceramics as part of the international arts community.

The first crEATivity club is lead by teacher, composer and activist Rabbi Miriam Margles, who has just moved back to Toronto, having completed a year in Israel as a Jerusalem Fellow at the Mandel Leadership Institute. We'll learn and sing our way toward the festival of Sukkot – its abundance, joy and prayers for rain – giving a Jewish twist to ‘singing in the rain’. Gene Kelly, step back!
