Two performances: 3 – 4 PM & 6 – 7 PM | FREE
Artscape Youngplace, 180 Shaw Street
Over the past 10 weeks, newcomer youth from four different language communities – Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog – have been collaborating with special guest artists and poet mentors to draw upon personal narratives and experiences, to express themselves through written and spoken poetry, in English and in their mother tongue.
Addressing fundamental questions such as “Who Am I?” while acknowledging the cultural significance of their mother tongue, this collaborative project aims to inspire participating youth to share their own stories, while building confidence in their writing abilities – emphasizing that everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard.
Youth participants have also been working with writers and performers to develop their poetry into an informal collective performance, to be performed on May 6. Their creative process and poetry will also be shared with the public as a series of short digital/video portraits on Koffler.Digital.
