A Jeweller's Legacy: An Evening of Celebration and Remembrance

  • Talks +More

Join us for an evening at Koffler Arts - A Jeweller's Legacy: An Evening of Celebration and Remembrance - in honour and memory of child Holocaust survivor and jeweller, Henry Schaffer.

A Jeweller’s Legacy will be an evening commemorating the life of Henry Schaffer through memoir, microhistory, music and art.

Henry's journey was one from war to peace. Born a week before the Nazis invaded his hometown of Warsaw, Poland in 1939, Henry survived the war and Holocaust through luck, perserverance and love of his mother Vera Schaffer. The family with the help of jeweller Simon Schaffer, thrived in Belgium after the war and eventually Montreal, where Henry became a jeweller himself as well as a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

The evening will include a reading from Henry's posthumously published memoir; a talk by Holocaust historian and professor of architecture from the University of Waterloo, Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt; a live performance of original music from Jen Schaffer and The Shiners, as well as visual art and artifacts inspired by this jeweller’s legacy.

Light refreshments will be served!

And proceeds will go to the Koffler Arts and Montreal Holocaust Museum, where Henry once gave testimony and where Dr van Pelt has been helping in the museum's renewal project.
