Exhibition Tour with Theatre Artists of 'Camp'

4:00pm-4:45pm: Exhibition Tour

5:00pm-6:00pm: Artist Talk

Join us for a tour of our current exhibition, followed by an Artist Talk led by those behind Camp, a 2021 shortlisted play for the Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition.

The Koffler Gallery, in partnership with Swiss Architect Manuel Herz and Canadian historian and curator Robert Jan van Pelt, announces the world-premiere exhibition of The Synagogue at Babyn Yar: Turning the Nightmare of Evil into a shared Dream of Good. The first major massacre of the Holocaust took place over two days in September 1941 in the Babyn Yar ravine in Kyiv, Ukraine. 80 years on, honour was paid to those murdered during those unspeakable events through the creation by the visionary Swiss archtect Manuel Hertz of an extrodinary, jewel-like, wooden synagogue which now memorializes the history and horror of Babyn Yar, a living sanctuary of hope for humankind.

After the tour, join playwright Naomi Tessler and Dramaturg Alysse Rich for an artist talk exploring their creative processes for Camp. Shortlisted for the 2021 Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition, Camp juxtaposes two 15-year-old girls' experiences—Lila at Jewish sleepover camp and Greta in a concentration camp. This research-informed play explores themes of womanhood, trauma, sisterhood and resilience.
