During this conversation, the audience will hear about the genesis and evolution of this project from artist Giselle Beiguelman, with additional insights from Dr. Jonathan Ferrier, a Mississauga, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) scientist and Biology professor at Dalhousie University.

It will be moderated by Josh Heuman our Head of Artistic Engagement at Koffler Arts.

There will be time set aside to include questions from the audience.

Giselle Beiguelman is a São Paulo-based artist who conceived of Botannica Tirannica after extensive research about plants that were given names – often pejorative toward marginalised and oppressed people – by European colonizers and scientists. This was (and remains) an act of erasure of Indigenous people’s knowledge and language.

Dr. Jonathan Ferrier is a Mississauga, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) scientist and Biology professor at Dalhousie University who has extensive botanical/taxonomic, historical and philosophical knowledge. He is featured as Indigenous botanical content lead for Botannica Tirannica.
